Alkaline Water - What's All The Fuss?

Alkaline and acidic have become pretty big buzzwords in the health industry, so what’s all the fuss about? As the Wellness generation grows and prospers, people are looking for simple, accessible ways to optimise their physical and inner health. Most people think food, nutrition, yoga and exercise. But imagine if there was a way to optimise your health and improve your life just by changing the water you drink every day. Well there is.

Drinking alkaline mineral water every day will assist reduce the acidity in your body, optimising your health and wellbeing and creating the foundation for self-healing and longevity.

Water is required for every biological function of the body - circulation, assimilation, digestion, elimination, temperature control and even thought. Our body is made up of 75% water and our brain is 91%, so by drinking water we replenish the water lost on a daily basis. Through proper hydration, our body is able to absorb vitamins and minerals on a cellular level creating the conditions for self-healing. We need water as much as we need air, but we need the right water.

Here are my top 5 five reasons why you should drink alkaline mineral water:

1. Enables cellular hydration for peak performance

Electrolytes are alkaline minerals that are commonly associated with heavy exercise and the need to rehydrate quickly. Gatorade, PowerAde and coconut water are the most commonly known electrolyte replacements drinks available on the market. The irony is, the very best way to rehydrate the body and replace lost electrolytes is through drinking alkaline mineral water. But be careful – not all alkaline water is the same! When we talk about alkaline mineral water we mean that your water is both micro-filtered (to reduce toxin load on your body) but most importantly, contains a balanced range of electrolyte minerals essential for rehydration, including Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium and Chloride (not chlorine!). Not just high levels of any one of these electrolytes which can create an alkaline water - it is the balanced range of alkaline (electrolyte) minerals that hydrates and works together synergistically to:

  • balance the amount of water in the body
  • carry impulses along the nerves
  • help make the muscles contract and relax
  • keep the body from becoming too acidic or too alkaline.

2. Restores pH balance to the body

Alkaline mineral water activates a chemical process in the body that restores and protects. When alkaline water (or food) is consumed, it stimulates the stomach which then releases hydrochloric acid. And this is good because the production of this hydrochloric acid in turn stimulates the release of bicarbonate buffers into the bloodstream. These are also known as alkaline buffers and they work to:

  • balance the acid in the stomach to prevent holes being burnt through the stomach lining
  • reduce the toxin or acid load in the blood
  • create a healthier more alkaline state

3. Eliminates toxins in the body and helps to prevent disease

Proper hydration is critical for the prevention of disease. Alkaline mineral water is the only water that is in a state that allows it to be completely absorbed and assimilated into the body. This allows for what we call cellular hydration. When we are properly hydrated on a cellular level, our body can flush out toxins that are otherwise stored in our cells in places such as our joints and behind our eyes.

In Australia, disease and illness are widespread. The statistics for growing ill-health in Australia are concerning:

  • Cardiovascular disease is our number 1 killer
  • Risk of developing cancer is 1 in 2 for men; 1 in 3 for women (trending to 1 in 2)
  • 37% of population suffer from a sleep disorder
  • Depression is linked to lack of quality sleep (World Health Organisation)
  • 60% of Australia’s adult population are overweight
  • Diabetes will affect up to 10% of the population

Creating the conditions in your body for optimum protection makes smart sense. Hydrating on a cellular level prepares and protects the body against disease.

4. Improves performance and focus

Hydration is linked directly to brain function – remember our brain is 91% water. Brain function relates to focus, concentration and memory. Luckily the body is a fine tuned machine that sends signs and symptoms of dehydration, hoping that the brain will eliminate the problem through hydrating. Signs or symptoms of dehydration include:

  • tiredness (even after a full nights rest)
  • anger
  • quick to overreact
  • depression
  • cravings for food

These responses are signs that the brain has very little energy from hydroelectricity to react appropriately, cope with usual stresses, absorb information or take decisive action. Hydrating on a cellular level will address these problems at their source.

5. Allows a better quality sleep

Dehydration is one of the prime culprits for insomnia. The body loses water through sweat, urination and bowel movements. This is usually replenished during the day by water intake. If however, you are tossing and turning at night, the chances are you have not rehydrated enough. This thirst should not be held off until the morning. Drink for a better nights sleep.

A general rule of thumb for healthy daily water consumption is 1 litre of water for every 25kgs of body weight. If you are exercising, drinking soft drinks, tea or coffee, or are ill, more water is recommended.

Alkaline water is not just hype. It is a fact of nature and is central to the future of Wellness in Australia. Why not enjoy a glass right now! Cheers!
