Do you know what’s in your tap water?

As one of the driest, most arid continents on the plant, water is a precious resource held across all of Australia. And yet, according to government sustainability guide Your Home, Australian’s are some of the greatest water consumers per capita, using an average of 100,000L of freshwater per person, per year. With modern distribution systems bringing a seemingly endless supply of water to our homes, schools and workplaces, many of us never stop in our busy lives to ask questions like: ‘Are there any risks or related issues to drinking Australian tap water?’, ‘Does the quality of tap water differ from state to state?’, and ‘How can we determine when water is safe for us and our families to drink?’ To understand the answers to those queries, its first important to understand where Australia’s main municipal water supply originates. The answer lies primarily with surface water stored in reservoirs across the nation, alongside a fraction derived from groundwater. This is set to change, however, as recent announcements from the Australian government surrounding climate change speak to the impending water shortages related to rising temperatures. More reliance will soon be placed on historical ‘non-conventional’ water supplies, like seawater desalination and treated wastewater, with plants and new practices being built and adopted across the country already.

How is our tap water treated and monitored?

With this exposure to the elements, people naturally wonder how their water is treated so no contaminants slip through into our systems, into our taps, and then into our glasses and drink bottles. A stringent disinfection process exists to purify the water we drink through destroying dangerous organisms present. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always catch everything that can harm us, such as when disease carrying germs cause pollution in reservoirs through infected animal droppings, or nitrates and more substances from the runoff of fertilisers, pesticides, arsenic, and industrial waste. This was of issue in the late 1990’s, after Sydney Water alerted residences of one of their largest treatment plants failing to remove a dangerous parasitic element from the water it released. This was rectified, but even today, our tap water review processes and regulations are only concerned with 70 chemicals, when over 300 of concern exist, including microplastics. Additionally, these regulations also state that the permissible amounts of tap water chemicals like chlorine, lead, and nitrates are set on the tolerance of adults and children, but what about smaller infants? Pregnant women with developing babies? The ABC has even reported on concerns around perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS) contaminating water sources across 60 Australian sites, which are artificial compounds used in various products like carpets and cooking equipment due to their heat resistance. The US Environmental Protection Agency states the health impacts of PFAS to include: Thyroid hormone disruption - Effects on the immune system - Low infant birth weights - Cancer While these may be considered as extreme cases, another factor to consider is that the efficacy of water treatment is measured directly after it leaves the process, meaning homes or workplaces with damaged or deteriorating pipes could be introducing new contaminants, such as copper, lead, plastics, iron, and biofilm.

Is Tank Water Safer?

The points above leave many people to prefer drinking tap water that has been collected by their roof into a tank. Unfortunately, there are still issues present with this process, too. Contaminants can still make their way into the water from decomposing leaves lingering in the gutters, deceased wildlife caught in the tank, disease carrying organisms and parasites from animal droppings, and even chemicals brought from stripped paint or wood fire smoke. A common result of these occurrences is gastroenteritis, or ‘gastro’, and infections that can place our younger population, or elder generations, or people with low immune responses and chronic illnesses at risk. The solution is to switch to a more comprehensive alternative water filter system that strips away the dangerous elements mentioned above but retains the essential nutrients and elements we need in water to survive and thrive. The zazen Alkaline Water System was designed with great effort to do just this and more.

    Best Water Filter System Ever...

I've been using my Zazen water filter system since first purchasing in 2009 (over 12 years ago). I have tried other kinds before, and nothing comes close to how much better the water tastes from using Zazen. Everyone that visits loves drinking our water and it has been fondly named by others as our rock water.. The customer service are always friendly and helpful. Best all round by far.. We greatly appreciate whoever created this water filter system. Our family feels confident we are drinking a clean pure water source when we drink from our water filter. Thankyou Zazen..

    Truly Clean Health Giving Water

The purchase of the product and customer support was great. In a matter of a month, the filtered tank water that I use in my Zazen Water Filter has shown me that the standard water filter system that is attached to our sink does not do a good job. The filter in my Zazen System is now going orangey brown, showing me how well it is working with already so called filtered water. Not only that, the mineralised and alkalised water it produces has become addictive to me. I love drinking it, which in turn is cleansing my body and helping me lose weight due to the amount I am drinking. Thank you

Had mine for 5 years now :)

I have had 2 units for more than 5 years (one at home the other at work). Getting replacements are easy and fast and despite the upfront cost - this saves us a tone of money and we all (staff and family) opt for some zazen water over bottled water

    Zazen water system

The water taste better but still not sure if it is what it says it is. It was alot bigger then l thought it would be, the glass is way to blue, alot darker then the picture shows. Considering the cost the nozzle is cheaply made, easy to brack and takes way to long to fill a jug due to the small whole where the water runs through. So just started using it so l hope l do get my moneys worth. I just wished it came in a different glass colour or a choice of colours.
