Why your shower water matters
When we talk about wellness, most of us think of food, movement, and mindset. But there’s one essential element that’s often overlooked – water, and not just the kind you drink. The water you shower in every day may be affecting your health more than you realise.
At zazen Water, we know that true wellbeing includes the water that touches your skin and the vapour that fills your lungs. We’ve been pioneering shower filtration in Australia since 2012, and with the launch of our newest model, the zazen Infinity Shower Filter, we’re making it easier than ever to transform your shower into a daily ritual of renewal.
The hidden impact of shower water
Every time you take a hot shower, the chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals in tap water are not only absorbed through your skin but also inhaled as vapour and absorbed directly into your bloodstream. Chlorine is a volatile gas that can irritate the lungs and exacerbate conditions like asthma, particularly in children. It also strips the skin of natural oils, weakening its protective barrier and contributing to dryness, itchiness, and sensitivity.
“Water wellness isn’t just about what you drink,” says Janet Parker, co-founder and CEO of zazen Water. “It’s also about what touches your skin and what you breathe in.”
This understanding led zazen to develop one of Australia’s first high-performance chlorine shower filters back in 2012. Now, over a decade later, the Infinity Shower Filter brings a fresh new design and improved usability to our proven technology.
What makes the Infinity Shower Filter different?
At the heart of the Infinity model is KDF® 55, a patented, NSF-certified filtration media specifically engineered for hot water environments, sourced directly from the European manufacturer and shipped to our warehouse for manufacture in Korea. It works via redox (oxidation-reduction), neutralising over 99% of free chlorine, chloramines and reducing heavy metals such as lead, mercury, copper, and arsenic.
Unlike filters that rely on ceramic beads or activated carbon (materials that degrade quickly in heat), KDF® 55 remains stable and effective. It also reduces soap scum and calcium build-up in your shower, so it’s easier to clean.
“In hot water applications, what’s critical is contact time,” says Janet. “The depth, density and volume of our filtration media are engineered to ensure maximum performance under Australian hot water conditions.”
The Infinity Shower Filter also features:
- A sleek, modern housing in brushed silver or matte black
- An easy-change cartridge – no plumber required
- A proven 6-month filtration life, backed by over a decade of customer use
- Universal fittings, compatible with most Australian shower heads
“What’s inside the filter matters most. Our media is certified, 100% safe, and 100% biodegradable, with no risk of releasing toxins back into your shower water,” Janet explains.
A wellness upgrade for skin, hair and lungs
“With conditions like eczema, asthma, and skin sensitivity on the rise, many are searching for ways to reduce environmental triggers especially for their children,” Janet says. “That’s where water quality comes in.”
Chlorine and chloramine are harsh chemicals that strips the skin of its natural oils, disrupting the skin barrier and leading to dryness and sensitivity. Showering in chlorinated water can also aggravate symptoms of eczema and other skin irritations. The Infinity Shower Filter helps restore the skin’s natural balance, resulting in softer, more hydrated, and less reactive skin.
Chlorinated water can also leave hair feeling dry, brittle, and harder to manage. Filtering your shower water helps maintain the scalp’s moisture balance and improves the texture and appearance of your hair. Users frequently share that their hair feels silkier, less frizzy, and more nourished after switching to filtered water.
Hot showers create steam, which allows chlorine and some other chemicals in tap water to vaporise at 37 to 43 degrees celcius – the temperature of a hot bath or shower – and be inhaled. Studies have shown that this exposure can be more significant than drinking unfiltered tap water, particularly for children or those with asthma. By removing chlorine at the source, the Infinity Shower Filter helps protect your lungs and reduces the risk of irritation caused by inhaling chemical vapours.
“We’ve heard from customers who say their skin stopped itching, their hair feels silkier, and even that their children’s eczema has improved,” says Janet. These are the kinds of changes that make every-day routines feel like a wellness ritual and that’s exactly why we created the Infinity Shower Filter.”
Janet says there’s a common misconception that shower filters can remove fluoride from shower water but explains concerns about fluoride filtration are unfounded.
“Fluoride has a evaporation point of 1,000 degrees Celsius and does not vaporise in hot shower water,” she says. “It’s also too large to pass through the skin barrier.”
