Your shower filter questions, answered

At zazen Water, we believe water should do more than hydrate. It should restore and reconnect us to nature. That’s why we’re proud to introduce the zazen Infinity Shower Filter, the latest and most advanced model in the zazen Shower Filter range.

Designed specifically for Australian water conditions and built with independently certified hot water filtration media, the Infinity Filter helps transform your daily shower into a safe ritual of renewal, supporting your skin, hair, lungs and overall wellbeing.

zazen co-founder and CEO Janet Parker, whose personal healing journey inspired the founding of zazen Water in 2008, answers your most asked questions about shower filters and explains why the right shower filter can help support the health of your whole family.

What is a shower filter?

A shower filter is a device installed between your incoming water pipe and shower head to remove chemicals – commonly chlorine and chloramines from your shower water. Chlorine and chloramine is added to municipal water supplies to make it safer to drink and bathe in, but it’s harsh on your skin, hair, and lungs, especially in a hot, steamy shower.

I thought zazen only made filters for drinking water?

I founded zazen Water in 2008 to support whole-body wellness through better drinking water. In 2012, I attended the Water Quality Association conference in the USA to understand the latest in water filtration media and technology and I learned more about the immediate and longer-term health impacts of hot shower water.

That same year, we pioneered the shower filtration market in Australia and New Zealand with the zazen Shower Filter range – an Australian Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) certified product incorporating a globally patented, certified filtration media that’s 100% recyclable and designed specifically for hot water environments.

Our latest model, the Infinity Shower Filter, continues our legacy of premium hot water filtration. Featuring the same high-performance media, it now comes in a sleek, easy-to-install design that fits 99% of showers, delivering trusted zazen protection in hot water up to 60°C.

Does the zazen Infinity Shower Filter only remove chlorine and chloramine?

Unlike many other shower filters, zazen Infinity actually removes up to 98% of water soluble heavy metals like copper, lead, mercury, cadmium and lead – common contaminants in Australian tap and tank water. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, and algae, while reducing soap scum (anti-scale) build-up by 90%!

This means a cleaner, healthier shower environment – better for your skin, your lungs, and your peace of mind every time you shower.

Do I need a shower filter?

If you’re concerned about the health of your skin, lungs and hair, or suffer from eczema or asthma, then yes – a shower filter will make the world of difference.

Tap water often contains chlorine, chloramines, and trace heavy metals, which can irritate sensitive skin, dry out your scalp, and even be inhaled as vapour. The zazen Infinity Shower Filter uses certified filtration media designed specifically for hot water to help reduce your family’s exposure to these contaminants.

Do multi-stage shower filters work?

Many filters on the market promote things like “15-stage filtration”.  This might sound impressive, but more layers or stages of filtration doesn’t necessarily mean better results.

In many cases, these layers are not certified, unsuitable for use in hot water, or don’t actively filter at all – they just take up space.

What truly matters is the quality, depth, and certification of the filtration media. That’s why we use NSF-certified KDF® media, which we import directly from the manufacturer into our Korean-based Infinity Shower Filter factory and carefully measured to ensure it performs exactly as promised, for the full life of the filter (water volume and lifespan).

What makes a shower filter effective in hot water?

Most shower filters sold in Australia haven’t been tested for hot water use, and many degrade quickly when exposed to heat.

The KDF®55 media in the Infinity Shower Filter remains stable and effective at high temperatures. Other materials, like granulated carbon or ceramic beads, can break down quickly in heat, reducing their lifespan and effectiveness.

For a shower filter to work effectively, it needs to offer media integrity and sufficient contact time with the water. And that’s exactly what the zazen Infinity Shower Filter delivers.

What certifications should I look for in a shower filter?

Look for independent certifications like NSF to ensure your shower filter delivers on its promises.

The zazen Infinity Shower Filter is backed by NSF-certified KDF®55 media and underpinned by our 17 years of experience in the Australian water wellness space.

Independent certification gives you confidence that the filter will perform safely and reliably over time, and that you’re investing in the wellbeing of your family.

How to install a shower filter?

The zazen Infinity Shower Filter is designed for simple, hassle-free installation – no plumber or tools required! It fits almost all standard shower setups and comes with a step-by-step guide and installation video so you can be up and running in just minutes.

How often do you need to change a shower filter?

For optimal performance, we recommend replacing your zazen Infinity Shower Filter Cartridge every six months or after 40,000* litres of water, whichever comes first. This ensures your filter continues to perform effectively and maintains the highest standard of protection for your family.

For the average family, this amounts to just 9 cents per shower – less than 40 cents a day!

Here’s how to calculate 40,000 litres:

Number of litres/day = water flow rate (9 litres per minute) x number of minutes per shower (average) x number of showers per day = litres per day x six months.

zazen will proactively remind you at the six-month mark it’s time to replace your shower filter.

Does a shower filter help with hair loss?

Chlorine and heavy metals in tap water can strip your hair of its natural oils, irritate the scalp, and lead to increased shedding and breakage.

By reducing exposure to these contaminants, the zazen Infinity Shower Filter helps create a healthier scalp environment, supporting stronger, more hydrated hair and helping your hair retain its natural vitality and shine.

Are shower filters good for skin?

Yes. Chlorine and other contaminants in tap water can disrupt your skin’s microbiome, dry out your skin, and worsen conditions like eczema or psoriasis. The Infinity shower filter helps protect your skin barrier, reduce irritation, and promote smoother, more hydrated skin.
